‘Tide has turned’ in Abortion Debate

Anti-abortion activists marched in Washington Friday at the annual March for Life.

A small group of Iowans were among the thousands who took part at the event.

“The tide has turned with a new presidential administration,” Iowa Right to Life spokeswoman Jenifer Bowen said.

Bowen said there was a lot of optimism at the march.

“The ultimate goal is to not only see an end to abortion but seeing a world where women are empowered to make other choices,” Bowen said.

Iowa Right to Life, along with an anti-abortion coalition made up of 13 other groups, would like to see dollars directed away from the abortion industry.

“If those dollars would go to community health centers where women can actually receive a full range of services and not just abortion-related services,” Bowen said.

State Representative Bruce Hunter (D.) said abortion is a thoughtful process and should be a personal matter.

“They’re done in consultation with other parents, other doctors, with clergy if necessary,” Hunter said.

Hunter said he believes everyone should be able to abide by their own belief system.

“Here in the United States we have the right to peacefully assemble and show our grievances against the government,” Hunter said.

Bowen said Iowans are always represented well at the March for Life and this year a total of eight buses from Iowa made the trip.
